There’s been a big buzz for the past couple of weeks about Google Search being able to index Instagram posts. My speakers bureau client asked me about this, thinking this was fabulous news!

My response was a bit of a “meh”.

For the past few years, Google has indexed many Instagram posts. To me, there’s no “there-there” for us to be super concerned about. Andrew Hutchinson from Social Media Today wrote something similar last week.

I found the criteria for Google Search to index an Instagram account fairly helpful.

Instagram Criteria

  1.  The Instagram account holder MUST be over 18 years of age.
  2.  The account must be set to PUBLIC.
  3.  The account must be a PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNT. This is critical for the Google to index.

Keep in mind that Google can then index all photos and videos from public reels. A user can also allow users with professional accounts to remix your content, which can also be indexed by Google. This is a key point that must be considered carefully.

Watch Your Brand’s Reputation

Most users probably have no malicious intent if/when remixing someone else’s content; they just want to share what they think is valuable for their audience while putting their own spin on it.

The problem is a user never really knows who is remixing their content, or how it will be featured. Users that do “borrow” someone else’s content don’t have to tell that user; hence, no guardrails, no expectations of what happens if you don’t like the remix.

If you find someone did remix your content and you’re not a fan, ask them to please remove it. If they refuse, you can file a grievance with Meta. Meta doesn’t have to grant your request, as Meta/Instagram allow users to set up our settings to prevent “borrowing” your content to remix.

Turn Off Indexing

  1.  Log in to your Instagram account.
  2.  Click or Tap your Account Privacy Settings.
  3.  Set your account to PRIVATE.
  4.  If you don’t want the private setting, you can convert your account to a PERSONAL status.
